Army Body Fat & Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator

Army body fat calculator for the 2026 waist-to-height ratio rule: apply Army rounding and truncation, check the 0.550 limit, and find your maximum waist.

Historical body-fat estimate

This dated archive is separate from the current WHtR screen. Enter the recorded average of three properly taken measurements at each site, using the historical half-inch rules. Site averages must already be recorded in half-inch steps. It does not describe the later one-site method.

Enter your historical measurements.

For men, use the abdomen at the navel; for women, use the natural waist and hip. Recorded neck rounds up; abdomen, waist, and hip round down; height rounds to the nearest half inch. The final estimate rounds to a whole percent.

How the Army waist-to-height ratio is measured

Army Directive 2026-13 replaced the in-service height-and-weight screen with a waist-to-height ratio; the older Army tape test estimate stays on this page as a historical reference. Height is rounded to the nearest half inch. Waist measurements are rounded down to the nearest half inch. Enter three measurements; if their spread exceeds one inch, the tool asks for a fourth and uses the closest three. The ratio is truncated to three decimals, not rounded.

A ratio below 0.550 meets the screening standard. A result at or above 0.550 requires a same-duty-day confirmation by a different measurement team before further action. A high AFT score does not provide an exemption. Compare the raw number in the waist-to-height ratio calculator, track fitness separately in the Army AFT calculator, or see the enlistment screen in the Army height and weight calculator.

Questions about this tool

How are the Army waist readings recorded?

The archived Annex A procedure rounds each waist reading down to a half inch, rounds height to the nearest half inch, and uses three readings. If the spread exceeds one inch, take a fourth reading and use the closest three. The displayed ratio truncates at three decimal places.

What happens at an Army ratio of exactly 0.550?

A recorded ratio of 0.550 does not meet the strict less-than-0.55 screening standard. The result therefore calls for same-day confirmation rather than labeling the measurement compliant. This calculator does not impose an administrative action; the authorized assessment team applies the complete confirmation and follow-up procedure for the individual Soldier.

Does a strong fitness score exempt the current ratio assessment?

The July 2026 procedure replaces the earlier body-composition workflow and removes the former high-fitness-score exemption from this screen. This page therefore does not bypass measurement when an AFT score is high. Historical exemptions should be interpreted only within the dates and conditions of the instruction that originally authorized them.

What does maximum half-inch waist mean on this page?

The displayed maximum is a half-inch waist value that stays below the strict limit for the recorded height. It is a practical training reference. Your actual recorded average can differ because it comes from multiple separately rounded measurements. Always use the complete readings and the authorized measurement procedure at the boundary.
